Age Management Medicine, including hypothyroidism

As over 8,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 daily, Age Management Medicine is at the forefront of 21st century medicine.  As we age, our body processes typically slow down.  Healthy aging programs centered on evidenced based patient care are attracting record numbers of physicians interested in incorporating these ideas into their practices.  This month, the Age Management Medicine Group held their annual conference for a membership of 14 thousand doctors from every state and 25 countries.

The goals of age management medicine include disease prevention, increased quality of life, enhanced wellbeing and longer health spans. The pillars of treatment in this area include: prevention and early detection, balanced hormone replacement, nutrition (including vitamin and mineral supplementation), and fitness.  Symptoms that often indicate problems in the area of aging include:  fatigue, decreased libido, increased belly fat, insomnia, mood changes. New thoughts in this field are: stem cell use, genetic testing, telomere length hormones and arterial conditioning.

Although there are many sub-topics in age management medicine, in this segment, Dr. Knott, who is an author in this field, will be discussing the hormonal aspects of aging and specifically hypothyroidism, its incidence, symptoms, and treatment.  The thyroid’s decreasing function often develops slowly and most people may not notice symptoms of cold, decreased heart rate, fatigue, gradual weight gain, depression and thinning hair. The thyroid gland regulates metabolism in the body, affects every organ and slows down production as we age.  Patients can find more information at www.managingyourage.com

The Face Clinic: Summer Skin Care to Facelifts

Summer time is “prime time” for skin care, for seeing and being seen!  We closely identify who we are with our faces. Taking care of our face and how we present ourselves in the world through our face is the topic of many discussions and actions.  From skin care at any age that can improve our appearance to facelifts that appear to  “peel” back the clock, this radio segment will focus on the skin care and appearance improvements that are possible for the face.

Licensed aesthetician Kim Bogash provides tips for a health glow, summer skin care and some noninvasive techniques to freshen the face. Nationally recognized Plastic Surgeon John Connors walks listeners through traditional and new techniques to improve facial appearance – from fillers to facelifts.  The first facelift was performed in 1901 in Europe and the procedure shows no sign of slowing down.

Facelifts remain one of the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures in the US, growing over 5% per year. Half of the recipients are in the 40-55 yr age group and almost 90% are female, although the number of men pursuing this procedure is growing as well.  Topics covered in this segment  will include skin care, minimally invasive improvements available, facelift myths, new procedures and techniques, and recovery post procedure.

Alternatives in Healing: An Overview of Alternative Medicine

Opinions may be heated about the efficacy of alternative medicine, but patients are using it and top American medical schools such as Georgetown, Duke, and the University of California are incorporating it into their programs.  Recent CDC data estimates that 38% of Americans use some form of alternative medicine. These patients, collectively are spending $34B per year, mostly out of pocket, on alternative medicine treatments. This accounts for $1 in every $10 spent out of pocket for Americans.  Pain is a common driver for patients seeking alternative medicine care.   Alternative medicine tenents include: 1) caring for the person as a whole vs. symptom and disease management 2) empowering patients to creative lifestyle conditions for optimal health 3) use of the body’s innate healing ability and 4) prevention of disease as a safeguard to future medical expenses.

Therapies and treatments used in alternative health span medication to meditation and often include: nutrition, herbology, spinal manipulation, energy treatments, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, relaxation and stress management and biofeedback.  It is not all “touchy feely”. High tech is also included as this segment will explore breast thermography as an example.  This segment will provide an overview of alternative medicine from the perspective of principles, evaluation process, treatments, costs, and success stories.

International Travel Medicine

Not only is summer travel season almost here, but international business travel is becoming the norm. Travel medicine is a rapidly evolving field of medicine.  As travelers prepare to travel, they must know the medical resources and care during their stay, and may require post travel follow up.

In 2012, over 1 billion people crossed international borders, yet reportedly, only 13% of them sought any kind of health care information or visits prior to departure.   People are traveling for business, as tourists, for adventure and for longer stays. The CDC estimates that 30-60% of travelers will be come ill as a result of their travel. This radio segment features pre-travel  preparation, vaccination requirements and recommendations, medical condition management, cruise ship concerns, and post travel care information as provided by Dr. Anderson and Kathy Buell, RN a local travel medicine expert with Passport Health.
